Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received last year, it wasn’t difficult to settle on this coffee for our next single-origin espresso. For the sixth year in a row we are offering a coffee from Rircardo Calderon’s coffee mill, Beneficio Los Angeles. It is located on a hill above the town of Santa Maria de Dota, in the heart of the Tarrazu growing region. In an effort to differentiate his coffee from other coffee produced in the Dota Valley, he broke away from the local cooperative, Coopedota several years ago, to establish his own mill. The Calderon family owns a collection of boutique coffee farms that include Vendaval, where this coffee was grown.

This red honey processed lot is so well balanced that we chose to deviate slightly from our usual approach to espresso roast profiles. We are taking the roast development time more quickly than usual, which helps to retain more bright fruit-tones. Due to the nature of the coffee itself, plenty of smoothness, expected in an espresso roast, is left intact. Tastes great on its own but also plays well with smaller milk drinks like cappuccino and macchiato.
