Last season we offered a beautiful coffee from the Hambela Estate. The coffee was produced by METAD, a well-respected agricultural development project. In addition to this large estate in Ethiopia’s Guji region, METAD also maintains operations in the town of Gedeb, in the Gedio Zone. Gedeb is located within the famous Yigracheffe growing region, about 25 miles south of Yigra Chefe town. This year we are happy to roast coffee grown by farmers from Gedeb, and meticulously processed at METAD’s Chelchele coffee mill.
METAD is focused on sustainable operations and actively invests in programs that benefit the community. Their workforce is comprised of seventy percent women, it funds an elementary school (with 650 students!) for worker’s children and provides healthcare to all employees. METAD is a third-generation family owned business with a rich history. Originally founded by Muluemebet Emiru, who received the farm as part of a government land grant after World War II for her service as Africa’s first female pilot. To this day the farm and processing mills are operated by her extended family.
